Robert Roy Durgin, 89, of Holland, passed away on Friday. He was a retired shipmaster from the Merchant Marine. Durgin was born and raised in Westwood, N.J., and was a 1938 graduate of Westwood High School. He attended West Virginia University from 1938 to 1940, and joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1946. Traveling overseas for 42 years in the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine, Capt. Durgin visited six continents and 55 countries, serving during World War II and assisting in the liberation of Papua New Guinea. He was a lifetime member of the Milford, Pa., VFW Post 8612, the Charlton American Legion Post 391, Boston Marine Society, Council of Master Mariners, the Marine Square Club (New York) and Southbridge Free Masons Masonic Lodge.
