PALMER - Police arrested two men on marijuana charges after officers went to serve a restraining order and noticed a "pungent odor of marijuana" when one of them answered the door. Police said he also had bits of marijuana all over his T-shirt.

Police Sgt. Christopher J. Burns said police went to 274 B Gates St. in the Thorndike section on Friday night and were greeted by Carlos Rios, 38, of that address. Burns said once Rios opened the door, officers noticed a “pungent odor of marijuana” and the plant fragments on his shirt.

He said Rios was processing marijuana, and approximately 30 plants were seized.

Rios and Stephen Rivard Jr., 34, of 184 Harkness Ave., Springfield, were charged with cultivation of Class D (marijuana) and possession of Class D with intent to distribute. Rios also was charged with Class D possession, subsequent offense.

The men were released on bail Friday night and will be arraigned next week in Palmer District Court. Burns said police went to the address to serve the restraining order on Rios.
