05.17.2011 | SPRINGFIELD - Trevin Smith is arraigned in Springfield District Court this morning.SPRINGFIELD - Trevin T. Smith appeared in Springfield District Court this morning to deny a charge of accessory after the fact to the April 30 murder of Sheldon Innocent.
Judge William J. Boyle ordered Smith, 30, of 79 Penrose St., held on $500,000 cash bail. Smith's defense attorney Alexander Nappan asked for a June 2 hearing to argue for a bail reduction.
The arraignment took place under heightened security, with about a dozen court officers on hand for the proceedings.
Smith was charged in connection with the April 30 shootings that killed Innocent, seriously wounded a barber and injured a state trooper and city police officer. Springfield police accused Smith of helping alleged gunman Tamik J. Kirkland flee the scene of the barbershop where Innocent was slain.
Kirkland has been charged in Innocent's murder, and is awaiting arraignment on charges of murder, three counts of attempted murder, armed home invasion and numerous armed assault and weapons violations. Shot six times by police, Kirkland was recently transferred from Baystate Medical Center to an unnamed Department of Corrections facility, where he continues to recover.

Police say he fled Massachusetts to family in Brooklyn after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Smith surrendered to officers in Brooklyn around 12:30 p.m. on May 4.
