Severe thunderstorm watch declared for Western Massachusetts

The watch covers the counties of Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire, as well as parts of southern Vermont and New Hampshire.

SPRINGFIELD - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Western Massachusetts through 8 p.m Friday.

The watch covers the counties of Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire, as well as parts of southern Vermont and New Hampshire.

A watch is declared when conditions are present to allow a thunderstorm within a 4-hour window inside the area of the watch.

The forecast is calling for a chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. / Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain.

Temperatures reached a high of 90 degrees at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee and 87 degrees in downtown Springfield.
