LONGMEADOW POLLS
The polls for Longmeadow's municipal elections will be open on Tuesday, June 7 as follows:
Where: Community House, 735 Longmeadow St.
When: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
LONGMEADOW - Whether or not to approve drainage line repairs on Ely Way and Englewood Road will be the only question on the ballot for the annual election to be held June 7.
Residents will be asked to approve a Proposition 21/2 override of $534,000 to repair drainage systems and erosion off Ely Way and Englewood Road.
Town Engineer Yem Lip said natural erosion has created a dangerous situation on Ely Way.
"The drain line and storm drain outfall have collapsed and the slope behind the home is failing," he said. "If we let this get any worse, the slope will get too close to the garage and the house causing some major problems."
There is a similar problem on Englewood Drive.
"A lot of this has to do with natural erosion, but also bad planning when the drains were put in," Lip said.
The projects could take several months due to the bidding and permitting process and construction time.
Up to $75,000 of the sum would be authorized for engineering and planning. The rest would go towards the repair work. The Finance Committee has approved the projects.
Lip said the town is slowly trying to obtain the money to do projects around town.
"We realize there is a lot of work to be done and we are trying to get to them as soon as we can," he said.
The election will also include several uncontested races. Marie Angelides, an unsuccessful candidate for state representative in the 2nd Hampden District last year, will be the only candidate on the ballot to replace current Select Board member Robert Barkett.
School Committee incumbents John J. Fitzgerald and Gwen M. Bruns will run for two three-year seats on the committee.
Michael Clark, who is currently on the Finance Committee, will run unopposed for a three-year seat on the committee currently occupied by Geoffrey Weigand, who has chosen not to run again.
Newcomer Laurie Flynn will run unopposed for a one-year School Committee seat. Flynn is running for a seat that is being vacated by Tracy DeMarco. DeMarco was appointed to the seat in 2010 after member Christine Swanson joined the Select Board.
In another uncontested race, Walter Gunn is running for re- election for a five-year seat on the Planning Board. Incumbent Roy Johansen will run for a three-year seat on the Planning Board and Stephen Metz, a member of the Capital Planning Committee, will run for a five-year seat on the Housing Authority.
