WEST SPRINGFIELD – The funeral for Angelica Guerrero, the mother who died shielding her 15-year-old daughter in a bathtub as a tornado hit their apartment building last week, has been scheduled for Thursday.

It will be held at 6 p.m. at the Toomey-Obrien Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield St., in West Springfield.

“There is no doubt she saved her daughter,” Police Chief Thomas E. Burke said last week.

A calling hour will be held at 5 p.m. immediately prior to the funeral service.

According to her obituary, which is scheduled to appear in The Republican Wednesday, Guerrero, 39, worked at the Wendy’s restaurant at the Holyoke Mall.

“Always known for greeting people with a smile, she enjoyed traveling, picking fruits and vegetables and walking in the park with her husband, Juan,” the notice reads. “But most of all, she was a loving mother to her two daughters.”

After the tornado hit their Union Street apartment building, Angelica’s husband, Juan and daughter, Ibone, were taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment, Burke said. Ibone suffered cuts to her legs, he said.

Angelica and Ibone were in the first-floor apartment of their three-family building in the vicinity of 687 Union St.

“The third floor is now in the cellar,” Burke said last week.

The chief said the Juan Guerrero was able to free himself from the wreckage and call out to neighbors for help. Firefighters freed the mother and daughter.

People who knew Angelica Guerrero, described her as a saint devoted to her family.

The couple’s older daughter Fabiola, graduated from West Springfield High School last year.

Angelica and Juan, were originally from Mexico and moved to Union Street about eight years ago after having lived in California and Missouri.

Angelica was born in 1972 in Sayula, Mexico, to Olegario and Ernestina Figueroa.

She also had two brothers and two sisters.
