Some people believe Anthony Weiner should resign for disgracing himself and the House of Representatives while others say the calls for his resignation are purely political. Here is what some of our readers had to say.
WASHINGTON - With one questionable picture already made public and a failed yet admitted coverup scandal behind him, N.Y. Rep. Anthony Weiner has taken a proverbial beating from Republicans as political supporters in his own party have turned their backs on him.
Things didn't get any easier for Weiner on Wednesday as radio personalities Opie and Anthony released a low-quality picture, reportedly of Weiner's genitals, after it was shown to them by Andrew Breitbart, publisher of the news portals Breitbart.com and Breitbart.tv.
News also broke on Wednesday that Weiner's wife is pregnant, amid bipartisan calls for him to step down from the House of Representatives.
Although most people, including Weiner himself, admit that for a politician to send such pictures to anonymous women on the Internet is stupid, the call for his resignation isn't unanimous.
Some people believe he should resign for disgracing himself and the House of Representatives while others say the calls for his resignation are purely political.
Here is what some of our readers had to say:
Vernon Hill: Weiner admitted to committing these acts (after lying about it first) and others. What is there to investigate? Please resign.
Ictf: What a disappointment and a total disgrace! He needs to resign at once. Have a feeling he will be gone within 24 hours after more text exchanges come out.
majority of 1: I'm not sure whether this move by the GOP is brilliant (hoping that politicizing this will make Democrats circle the wagons and embrace this guy) or stupid (when someone is determined to injure himself, steer clear!)
I'm leaning towards stupid. This will allow the media to change the topic from the offensive conduct to how this is an issue of "partisanship" and how there's such a negative tone in Washington, and that Weiner is a victim of "gotcha politics", etc.
From a purely political move, the Republicans won't pick up this house seat in a special election. That district hasn't voted for a Republican since the 1920's. Better to leave an impotent (pardon the pun) incumbent in place who'll need to keep a lower profile than to have a new candidate who won't have his first scandal for a while.
marples: "House ethics rules state that members must comport themselves in a manner befitting their office."
Weiner was adhering to Washington D.C. ethics. Compared to President Clinton, Weiner is a role model for pious and ethical behavior.
