FITCHBURG — A six-alarm blaze has torn through a five-story, 47-unit apartment building in downtown Fitchburg but authorities say there are no reports of injuries.

The fire was reported at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday and the building was evacuated by 10 p.m.

Fire officials in this northern Worcester County city say the building, with retail space on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floor, is a total loss.

The 19th century building, known as the Johnsonia, is a former hotel on Main Street.

Firefighters from several surrounding communities, including Gardner, Leominster, Lunenburg, Westminster and Sterling, either helped fight the blaze or covered Fitchburg stations.

There was no immediate word on what started the blaze.
