Gunfire erupted around 2:30 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Wilbraham Road and Alden Street in the northeast corner of the Upper Hill neighborhood. The shooting occurred outside a gas station across from the main gate of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co.
SPRINGFIELD -- City and state police are investigating a shooting incident reported around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the Upper Hill neighborhood.
A Massachusetts State Police trooper was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Wilbraham Road and Alden Street, near the main gate to the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co., when multiple gunshots rang out.
Police said several people were outside a gas station at the intersection when some sort of altercation apparently led to the gunfire. It was not immediately clear if the gunman fled the scene on foot or in a vehicle.
Initial police reports indicated that as many as seven shots were fired.
"Everybody scattered," Trooper Todd Nolan said.
"No suspects, no arrests, no (known) injuries at this point," said Nolan, who is stationed at the Springfield barracks.
Investigators said they recovered five spent shell casings near the shooting scene.
City hospitals had not reported any gunshot victims as of 3 a.m., police said.
Around 3:11 a.m., a Springfield police officer patrolling the area said he was flagged down by a civilian who provided information about the alleged gunman.
The officer said the suspect, who is believed to be armed and dangerous, was described to him as a black male wearing a bright white baseball cap and long jean shorts.
"If you come across the subject, just use caution," a police dispatcher warned officers looking for the suspect.
Springfield Police Capt. Cheryl C. Clapprood said officers were still working on a report, and more information would be available later Saturday.
