The camps are presented under the auspices of DARE, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, which was adopted in Granby in 1988.
GRANBY – The Granby Police Department again will sponsor one-week summer day camps in basketball and soccer for young people.
This year the DARE Soccer Camp will be held July 25-29 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for children in grades 3 to 10.
The DARE Basketball Camp will run July 11-15 for grades 6-10 and July18-22 for grades 3-6. Sixth-graders can attend either basketball camp – or both, if space is available.
All camps take place at Granby Junior-Senior High School, 385 East State St. Fee per camp is $40, with discounts if more than one family member signs up.
The programs are open to children from any town, but they fill up fast, said Granby Police Officer James White, who organizes the camps with fellow officer Kurt Carpenter.
Soccer is limited to 100 children, while Basketball has drawn up to 200, said White. This is the 17th year for the summer program.
The camps are presented under the auspices of DARE, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, which was adopted in Granby in 1988. Carpenter is the DARE officer for the Granby Schools.
Officers still visit sixth-grade classrooms at East Meadow School to talk about the importance of resisting drugs.
White describes the police role at the sports camps as “camp counselors.” They also play alongside the kids.
The teachers at the camps include Michael Gill, a coach in the Southwick schools, and Todd Dorman, a coach at Granby Junior-Senior High School.
Applications for the camps are available at the Police Department in the Public Safety Building, 259 East State St., Granby, and online at www.granbypd.org.
