Tom Brady on Patriots loss: 'We have to do a better job, and it starts with me'

Brady wasn't pleased with his performance Sunday.

Tom Brady didn’t make excuses.

He knows what happened during Sunday’s 24-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, and he knows it wasn’t good. Brady knows the only two plays that mattered – an interception and intentional grounding penalty – took 10 points off the board and led to New England’s demise.

“I thought we squandered quite a few opportunities today,” Brady said. “Certainly we have to do a better job, and it starts with me.”

Outside of those two moments (detailed here), Brady pieced together a solid passing line. He completed 62 percent of his passes for 395 yards and two touchdowns, and threw a career-high 58 passes. His previous best was 55, which he reached twice.

His high output came at the expense of the running game, and New England ran just 26 times after averaging 38.5 attempts over the first five weeks. Stevan Ridley, who was fifth in the league in rushing, gained just 34 yards on 16 carries.

Brady said the reason for the shift in philosophy was necessary due to the way Seattle was playing them.

"This is a team that really forces you to throw the ball, based on the schemes that they play," Brady said. "But whatever we do we have to do it effectively and efficiently, whether it's running it or throwing it. We had some real good run plays in there. We had some good pass plays in there. I just thought that there was more in the running game and more in the passing game that we just didn't have. I thought that's why you come up one point short."

The shortcomings in the passing game seemed to be caused, at least in part, due to the elements. Brady completed 21 of 30 passes for 216 yards in the first half, but was 15 of 28 for 179 in the second and skipped several passes as the rain picked up.

One of those passes led to his first interception on an underthrown pass to Deion Branch. He later added another on a pass in the end zone during the fourth quarter, though weather did not seem to play a factor there.

"I just wish I just executed better, to tell you the truth," Brady said. "I don't think about the weather much. I just try to go out there and do my job the best I can, and obviously the throws that were under-thrown, I wish I did a better job putting it where the guy could catch it."
