LONGMEADOW - Walter M. Haas, 88 of Longmeadow and Naples, Fla., and formerly of Falmouth, Maine, passed away last Friday after a period of illness. Born on Oct. 3, 1922 in Shaker Heights, Ohio, was as the son of Helen (Rohrheimer) and Walter M. Haas, Sr. A graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer escort from 1943 to 1946. He also attended Case Western Reserve University, where he graduated with a master's degree in social work. Walter moved to Manhattan and began his career at the Jewish Board of Guardians, and subsequently at the New York City Youth Board. Walter Haas' career in social work spanned more than a half century. For several decades, he was employed by Westchester Jewish Family Services in White Plains, N.Y., in the capacity of chief psychiatric social worker. He was a psychodynamically trained therapist, and enjoyed supervising graduate students in clinical internships. He wrote several articles on methods to enhance successful therapeutic outcomes which were published in Social Work and other professional journals. Committed to social change through peaceful methods, he was an ardent civil rights activist in the 1960s and an early, steadfast supporter of the women's movement.
